July 24, 1951: Sis Boom Bah
This is a rather sharp strip that could be taken as critical of the idea of parades. Were Schulz's midwestern sensibilities offended by such ostentation displays of pride? Heck, I'm not from the midwest at all and I consider them overblown.
Mostly though, I linked to this one because I like the third panel.

I'm from the Midwest (granted, a bit south of Schulz and a decade and a half after this strip), and far from having our "midwestern sensibilities" offended by ostentation, we LOVED parades and Patty's reaction is spot-on. The humor, to a midwesterner of that era, comes from the nostalgia of being so young that a one-man one-dog parade is just as satisfying as the one for the Tournament of Roses would be.
