Hm, could be. It's so ubiquitous in later Peanuts I didn't even think to remark upon it here.
This is pretty "meta" for the strip. Could Schulz have realized that he'd run out of mud pie jokes?
Oh, as we see in following strips, it is quite some time until the Fount of Mud is extinguished.
