Remember: at this point in his life Charles Schulz has served a full term in World War II. It's kind of surprising this hasn't come through more often, actually.
Not only did most adult males of Schulz' generation have some level of military service as a result of WWII, but the Korean War was still being fought during this period, and the draft was in effect. Military life, therefore, was a far bigger part of the American experience than it is today... so the humor of this strip would have seemed particularly relevant.
