November 1-6, 1954: Leaves can be surprisingly vindictive
This strip reminds me of later strips in which characters try to figure out what to do with jack-o-lanterns after Halloween. I seem to remember "Peppermint" Patty trying to make a pie.
November 2
Oh they look harmless, but don't make them mad!
November 3
More of Lucy's off-kilter way of looking at the world. She's old enough now that she knows a bit of the world, but isn't old enough that she has all the concepts right in her head, which I expect made her a fun character to write for. Which might explain why we've had a lot of her lately.
November 4
Why is Pig-Pen so happy in the third panel? The rest of it is easily understandable, but why is he so amused there? Is it because he knows Snoopy standing there and he sees the hole Charlie Brown is digging for himself? Is it just that he doesn't care how he is perceived?
November 5
Oh, to be delivered unto Lucy's tender mercies! Linus is right to be afraid. "AAGH" doesn't seem to be nearly frightened enough by my reckoning.
November 6
Well, getting a picture is a lot easier than taking a whole bath.

Sunday, October 10, 1954: Snoopy vs. The Yard: Another Leaf
Read this strip at gocomics.com.
Snoopy shows a lot of the passion of his younger years here. Later he's a much more sedate dog, maybe because his late-era character design is incapable of much motion.
Panel two is rather cute, I think anyway. Panel four is a transition between compact, sitting-down Snoopy and stretchy, loose running-around Snoopy.

Sunday, July 4, 1954: Snoopy vs. The Bird
Read this strip at gocomics.com.
Independence Day, 1954. Nothing patriotic or so here, but we do have the return of the Realistic Bird.
This is uncharacteristically violent of Snoopy. If he had caught that bird what would he have done with it? The thing's smaller than his mouth.
It is making a bit of an assumption, but it is possible that this is THE bird, Woodstock's mother. Woodstock came into the strip as one of a number of birds who were born there in a nest on Snoopy's stomach in a well-remembered sequence. She disappeared from the strip and was never seen again, although Schulz made a big thing about Woodstock's pining for her.

September 15, 1953: Snoopy. vs the Yard: Butterfly II
Be careful what you want!
I like this one for the variety of sounds Snoopy makes in the last one. Especially "fooey." Very descriptive.

September 14, 1953: Snoopy vs The Yard: Butterfly
It's not yard equipment, but it's the same idea; something in the world confuses Snoopy terribly. It's a light, whimsical strip.
Is that one butterfly in the last panel flying fast, or is it multiple butterflies. Are they defending the first one, or is it just a happenstance swarm? For some reason my initial reading was the former, but now that I look at it I think it's intended to be a swarm.

Sunday, January 4, 1953: The Cookie-Hound
Snoopy at his cutest harasses the hapless Linus for his cookies. Eating a whole box of the things probably isn't very good for either of them.
Question for you. If Linus weren't on the scene yet, would it be suitable to use this same strip, all other things being equal, with Lucy when she was an infant? Even with her put-upon early personality, it doesn't quite seem like it would be a suitable strip for her, which indicates that the characters' do have a developed personality at this point.

May 19, 1952: Snoopy chews out Charlie Brown
A very cute strip. I like that one "ARF!" that's rendered with serif letters.
Charlie Brown takes it so hard that he reflexively holds his hat in his hands in defense!

January 29, 1952: Snoopy's Pride
Snoopy doesn’t stoop to begging for treats... unless someone else might get it instead.
What kind of candy is this that it’s equally suitable for kids and dogs?
