Another "Linus is into weird stuff" strip... and also a bit of lost history. Probably no one under the age of 30 remembers genuine test patterns, which were displayed when stations went off the air or when they had technical difficulties. In 1954, many stations broadcast actual programs for only a few hours each day, and showed test patterns the rest of the time to help engineers calibrate their equipment. Now that most stations broadcast 24/7 (showing infomercials in the wee hours if nothing else), and technical problems are rare, test patterns have become an artifact.
