March 18, 1953: Lucy Plays Space Gun

Usually the girls so far have engaged in stereotypical feminine pursuits when playing, but Lucy shows that (aside some some onomatopoetic problems) she is fully prepared for the coming age of high adventure in space, due to arrive some time, oh, around the 1990s.

  1. I remember this one from the paperback collections I had as a kid in the '70s.

Now, in my 40s, I am surprised and aghast that I am geek enough to recognize that Schultz modeled Lucy's gun after the Buck Rogers Rocket Pistols and Disintegrator Pistols produced by Daisy well into the '50s. That little camel-hump greebly thing on top of the receiver is really distinctive.

  2. Schulz had a lot of fun with space and science-fiction themes during the '50s -- no doubt reflecting the popular culture and mindset of the time. Sort of sad to think that back then, it was largely *assumed* that we'd have colonized most of the solar system by the 21st century...
