  2. Referring to oneself in the third person is a way to establish one's legitimacy in one's own eyes. If you think of yourself as a person disconnected from your selfness, it's a way of establishing that your opinions have weight. It's easy to discount the things you say in your internal mind because it's you who're thinking them.

    This is mostly speculation, mind you. Note that Lucy's introduction is not all that far off, and she refers to herself in the third person frequently in the early days. (Maybe the above explains why she's such an egotist?)
